"Great for people who value effort and dare go outside" 2010-04-15
By Yamaplos (Austin Texas)
People who know that rewards come from effort will find this solar educational toy to be good value and good fun, and also good education. As other reviewers mention (and as is clearly marked) this has small parts, and needs assembly. People who like the easy way out will find this does not work for them.

Not only is this "solar robot kit" not that expensive, "ready to run" alternatives cost several times over, and are not at all that educational really: the need to put effort, and attention to detail, are good educational points in themselves, besides the physics and electronics, and the actually being able to see how it all fits together to work.

BTW, this is a *solar* item. It is NOT designed to work under electric lamps. To get full results you may have to go outside, another big plus in itself.

Highly recommended for homeschoolers. Maybe 10 years old is about the youngest I would give this to, 12 being about ideal.

"Very disappointing" 2010-03-22
By Lindsay (IL USA)
We built the car, and it is tiny! The wires are very hard to connect and slip easily out of the coils they are poked through. We have not been able to power the car with sunlight, and can't get it to work with a flashlight. If we hold it up to a ceiling light the wheels turn, but that's it thus far. Great concept, but too frustrating in execution (even for adults!).

"Great concept - Bad Execution." 2010-03-15
By Shaymarie (Tulsa, OK)
The product is not very durable. I found the solar panel barely has enough oomph to power the motor. It was disappointing after spending the time putting it together.

"Fun and great way to learn about solar/energy power" 2010-03-03
By SuzieeQQ (San Diego)
From my 9 year old son: "With this toy you can make 6 different items, but you have to be careful because the pieces are fragile. When you re-assemble it into another shape, one of the pieces broke when I pulled a piece off, I pulled it too hard (I learned this the hard way because when the piece broke, I couldn't fix it) because the parts are fragile. It's fun to put together although I recommend an adult's help because the gearbox is tricky to put together."

From my 9 year old daughter: "This toy is fun to put together but don't forget they need to be in direct sunlight to work. We live in San Diego where it is mostly sunny, so we can play with ours outside, but you cannot play with it inside unless you have a very sunny room---but this is what teaches you how solar power works!"

From me: "I bought this toy because it is a Top Doctor Toy winner. I thought the toy was great fun, they learned a lot, but I was surprised that the toy is only 2 inches long. Again, this is a good lesson about solar power and the idea of the size of the solar collector and the energy output.

"Incredibly Small" 2010-02-22
By TravelMom (Clifton, NJ United States)
I bought this as a project for my 6-year old daughter and her father to do together. So far they have completed the solar car and it does work, but we were incredibly disappointed by how small the pieces are. The pictures they put on the box are VERY misleading...you'll notice there are no people, hands or other items in the pictures or background, and we actually feel as though this was done intentionally to lead people to believe that the pieces are larger than they actually are. When we got the box we couldn't believe how small it was, and upon opening it we realized that the entire thing is just very very small. To put it in proper perspective, the finished car is 2.5 inches long, 1.5 inches wide, and 2.75 inches tall when the solar panel is extended all the way up. As for the actual solar panel itself, it is 1 inch x 1.25 inches. My daughter got this as a birthday present so she is not "disappointed" as she was not expecting anything one way or the other, but if you are looking for a kit to make large-sized items this is not the one to get.
